Five by Five Development was founded by Bill Vaglienti in 2013 to develop concepts for small civil and commercial unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems such as quad rotors; and to pursue the integration of mobile phone technologies into UAVs.
The name "Five by Five" hearkens to the traditional method for testing voice communications. The sending party counts: "one, two, three, four, five". If all five numbers were clearly heard the receiving party replies: "I read you five by five". Software development and wireless communications both lay at the heart of UAV systems, so "Five by Five Development" seemed a fitting name (and it sounds better than "loud and clear development").
